Technological Progress vs. Moral Progress

Notes from book 1 of CS Lewis' Space Trilogy: Out of the Silent Planet
5

CS Lewis’ Space Trilogy has been a huge influence on me as long as I can remember and it’s only grown more profound the older I’ve gotten. Especially relevant has been the discussion of scientific progress, technology, and the influence demonic forces, something we’ve spent a lot of time talking about in the last few months on the podcast.

As I argued in a talk I gave at Doxacon years ago, the Space Trilogy might be the best science fiction ever written, given that Lewis understood the deep secular, materialist roots of the genre and wrote a series that explicitly called out those roots and challenged them—a challenge that has never, as far as I’m aware, been answered.

Today I read to you a powerful passage from the first book, Out of the Silent Planet, in which Lewis deconstructs the whole myth of progress with biting, hilarious satire—in the 1930s! Needless to say, these topics remain relevant, especially on the heels of our Dark Logos series.

Hope you enjoy!
